If you’re in the mood for a great bowl of soup – I know exactly where you should go. In the middle of Philly’s Chinatown lies a hidden gem on North 10th Street, called Spice C. It’s right on a street corner and I’ve eaten here probably at least 20 times in the past year. (Can you tell? I’m addicted.) :O) It has probably one of the best hand-drawn noodle soups I’ve ever had so far. There are a bunch of other regular noodle dishes and rice dishes available, which are delicious too, but it’s the soup that brings in most of the customers!
And their speciality? It’s the szechuan spicy noodle soup. Basically, its a large bowl of seasoned beef broth with hand-drawn noodles, mushrooms, cilantro, bok choy, choice of meat AND the most amazing hot oil seasoned up with some type of addictive, firey ingredients. It’s available in MILD, MEDIUM and HOT. But to be honest, if you plan on really trying to enjoy this soup, get the MEDIUM or HOT. You literally have to feel the burn to get the full effect of this deliciousness. Our favorite soups are the beef flank steak and wonton. The beef is tender and melt in your mouth. The wontons are soft and filled with really good ground pork (The noodle soups come in other non-spicy varieties on the menu.)
Now in addition to the soup, YOU HAVE to order the pan-fried pork dumplings AND the szechuan chicken wings. These wings are ridiculously delicious and hot – I mean literally burn your fingers and tongue temperature. And I can’t get enough of them! They are marinated in sweet and spicy seasonings then fried up golden brown. After fried, they are sautéed with fresh ginger, pepper flakes, onions, green bell peppers and hot oil. The end result is mouth-watering, perfectly-crispy, sweet, spicy and burn your tongue chicken wings that are like nothing I’ve ever had before. (My mouth is literally watering as I’m writing) :O)
By the way – this place is a little hole in the wall place and filled with locals. To me, this is the best thing cause it just means the food is really good, really fresh and the same people are coming over and over again. As a matter of fact, I’ve seen the same guy at the same table at least the past 3 times I’ve been back to Spice C. If you’re looking for fine dining and foofey table service, then this is not the place to go. BUT, if you’re looking for something comforting, filling and just plain good – Spice C is it people!
By the way, it’s even better on a rainy day!!
